Nicaragua

Many people forget, but in the 1970's Nicaragua had a larger economy than both Costa Rica and Panama.  The beautiful Central American country had a prosperous and bright future.  Then in 1972 a destructive earthquake leveled the capital city of Managua followed by the crippling revolution in 1979.  Overnight international investment withdrew and tourism dried up.  Fast forward to 2018 and Nicaragua has again become a fashionable tourist destination.  The lowest violent crime rate in Latin America and the emergence of a handful of five star resorts; most notable Mukul Resort and Spa, had Nicaragua back on track as one of the hottest vacation destinations.

2008 - 2018 was a beautiful ten year run for Nicaragua with tourism and exports nearly doubling and unemployment at its lowest since the early 70's.  It didn't take long for travelers to fall in love with the people of Nicaragua, their 'salt of the earth' values and a rich and vibrant culture full of laugh and dance.

In early May 2018, Nicaragua's Social Security System announced bankruptcy. Students lined the streets of the capital city of Managua in protest and were met with resistance. Conflict persisted over the following few months and Nicaragua once again found itself with a stagnant economy.

Today, Nicaragua is safe and orderly.  Tourists have began to return and on the surface all is back to normal. Fundamental ground root issues still exist but as a tourist, one would be hard pressed noticing a change.

Just a 25 minute flight from Liberia's International airport Casa Madera sits directly on the pristine shore of Playa Manzanillo.  With breathtaking vistas of the Pacific the beachfront Casa Madera offers ocean living at its finest. Offering all the amenities of Guacalito de la Isla, this luxury villa is a home away from home for beach enthusiasts, surfers, golfers and perfect for gatherings of friends and family.

At a generous 13,000 square feet, guests enjoy a main house with four ocean-view bedrooms, entertainment/living room, dining area and gourmet kitchen with breakfast bar; outdoor parlour and dining room, and private oceanfront pool. Just steps away through the courtyard is a casita with a fifth bedroom and en suite bath for additional guests. To ensure personal comfort, a Chef exclusive to the villa will be on hand to cater to guest requests.

Casa Madera is one of seven beach homes in Nicaragua's Premier Development - Guacalito de la Isla.  Located in the South West of Nicaragua and 10 minutes drive from Costa Esmeralda International Airport (a 20 minute flight from Liberia Costa Rica via Sansa Air).

Contrary to many reports, Nicaragua is extremely safe for tourists.  What has been a sad and difficult time for Nicaraguans and the country has been isolated to the capital of Managua and a few northern cities.  The unfortunate violence has been taken place has been between protestors and government troops. There has not been a single incident involving tourist nor traveler.  The south west of Nicaragua know as the Emerald Coast has been calm and orderly since the governmental issues began in early May 2018.

What's there to do?

Surf

The Emerald Coast of Nicaragua has become one of the top surf destinations in the world. Casa Madera is surrounded by 6 world class waves, most notably 'Manzanillo' just a short walk down the beach. Beginners will enjoy the beach break 'Windmills' literally directly out the back door. Whether you take our boat to explore the new breaks, get towed into something big on our jet ski or want to improve technique on the foam boards; Casa Madera is a surfers Mecca. Best time of year:  May - September.

Fish

Inshore Fishing is good year around in Nicaragua.  However when the winds come down from June - October is when the offshore fishing turns on.  Striped marlin, sailfish and dorado are all around during this time.  Our boat, equipment and professional captain are dialed in  to put you on the fish.

Boat

During your stay the boat is yours! The fun beach town of San Juan del Sur is 40 minutes south by boat where you can enjoy lunch and cocktails. Numerous white sand beaches provide the perfect escape for a private picnic. Tubing, wake boarding and romantic sunset cruises are a few of the many opportunities your boat will provide.

Golf

Guacalito's 18 championship golf course was designed by David Kidd, the same architect of Bandon Dunes and the Castle course at St. Andres. The friendly course meanders through the jungle before finishing on the ocean.  There is a driving range complete with practice sand, pitching and putting green. A second course located a few minutes away provides a more relaxed beach atmosphere.

Jetski

We always tell our guests riding a ski on the open ocean is a much different experience than that on a lake.  It's not for the faint of heart but for those with brave souls (and a signed waiver) there is no better way to explore the coastline.

Snorkeling and Spearfishing

For a look under the surface we have snorkel and spearing equipment available. One small secluded bay in particular within the development of Guacalito provides a good respite from the waves and wind.  Looking for a dive partner of want to learn the art of spearfishing? We can coordinate and experienced guide to show you the basics of the ancient art. Who knows, you may even come home with dinner.

Dining

Other than your in house chef, there are a multitude of dining options in the surrounding area. From local Nicaraguan cuisine, fresh daily seafood to sushi there are plenty of great restaurants under 30 minutes from Casa Madera. Let your concierge know what days/meals you plan on eating out and she dial you in.

Tres Ciebas Beach Club

During your stay at Casa Madera you will have access to the Beach Club at Guacalito. Just a short stroll down the beach the club offers a complete restaurant and bar, pizza oven, pool, day care and beach cabanas.

Casa del Golf

Casa Del Golf is located in the La Reserva neighborhood of Guacalito de la Isla. This magnificent residence offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Manzanillo Bay. A tropical paradise for those in search of the exotic and undiscovered. The 5,012 square foot villa offers 4 bedrooms, 5 baths and sleeps up to 8 people.

The exterior offers a large infinity pool and deck along with a pool side palapa complete with a flat screen TV, bar, and BBQ. The house is equipped with it´s own Service Area and Service Kitchen to ensure your catered dining doesn't disturb your stay. The four bedrooms are located in 3 fully separate Villas and provide complete privacy from one another. The expansive Main Room includes a Luxury Kitchen, Dining Area and Media Center.

Sitting squarely above hole number 3 on the Guacalito Golf Course, DMK Villa offers its own pitching area for those who hope to improve their short game.

David McLay Kidd's Signature Oceanfront 18-hole Course is a challenge to players of all skill levels, Guacalito Golf Course seamlessly melds natural terrain while preserving the breathtaking environment that makes Nicaragua's Emerald Coast special. Beautiful hardwood bridges made with fallen timber grace many holes. A specially treated-water irrigation system maintains the resort's commitment to sustainability. On the 18th hole, an unconventional par-3, was designed specifically to save mature trees instead of removing them.
